Week 27 Day 1: Death and Resurrection

Forward

This week, we’ll complete the reading on the Gospel of Matthew and start on the Gospel of Mark.

In Gospel of Matthew, before parting, Jesus reminded us that we need to be alert and be prepared as He would come back at any time. It might be rare to see someone who isn’t interested in preparing for his or her own wedding; It is unimaginable for any disciple not to prepare for Jesus’ second coming. Our lives are not our own, and Lord may take it away at any moment. Only by knowing such urgency will make us vigilant and avoid regret. Let’s start serving others.

I shall not be ashamed when facing Jesus of thoughts deep in my heart, my private life, or my relationship with others. We are prepared when we treasure our relationship with God and make God the center of our lives. Being prepared makes us anticipate the beautiful eternity, makes life’s worries less important and turns our eyes to the greater needs.

May our God’s word renew you all each day!

Week 27 Day 1: Census and Placement

### Question How were the census conducted and tribes' camps arranged? {% include BibleLinks2020.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + The first census and where each of the tribes were placed around the Tent of Meeting. + The census was for "twenty years old or more and able to serve in the army." (1:3) The tribes were arranged according to their army divisions. God turned the Israelites from a group of slaves into an army. He prepared them for war to fight their way into the promised land. ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - The Israeli tribes were arranged around the Tabernacle to put God in the center. Am I placing God in the center of my life? + **Identity** - God promised Abraham to become a great nation when he had no hope of having offspring. By this time, those who were 20 or older numbered at 603,550, not counting the tribe of Levi. The promise was being fulfilled one step at a time. Is the value of everything I see based on God's promise? + **Fidelity** - He transformed the Israelites from slaves to army. Do I know that I was a slave of sin and now, with God's salvation, an elite solder of His army?

Week 27 Day 2: Kingdom of Priests

### Question How did God make Israel a kingdom of priests? {% include BibleLinks2020.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + Chapter 3 starts in Genesis like fashion with the lineage of the Levites. + God established the kingdom of priests as the works for the tribe of Levi were around the Tabernacle signifying God's covenant with Israelites and His presence. ### Meditation: My Story + **Identity** - Reference Genesis 49 and Exodus 32. Levites loved God and offered themselves to God. Now God took the Levites as substitute for all Israelite firstborns to serve Him. Likewise, when we turn to God, we are offering ourselves to Him and serve Him. Think about the transformation God has done for my life.

Week 27 Day 3: The Holy Nation

### Question How did God make Israelites the holy nation? {% include BibleLinks2020.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + God called the Israelites to become His holy nation. + The laws to keep the Israelites clean: + Restitution for wrongs: to keep Israelites united. + Holy marriage: to keep the descendants clean. + Nazirites: a special testimony to God's calling. + Aaron's blessing: Reaffirmed God's promises and pointed the Israelites to the promised land. ### Meditation: My Story + **Community** - God made the Israelites His and established laws and rules on restitution to keep them united. Do I value the unity of Christians or am I damaging it? + **Fidelity** - God put great emphasis on fidelity in marriage. Do I value my marriage as holy and being faithful to my spouse?

Prayer

Notes and Responses

Week 27 Day 4: To Serve Wholeheartedly

### Question How did the Israelites celebrate and serve when the Tabernacle was set up? {% include BibleLinks2020.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + This chapter documents the events after Exodus 40 where Moses set up the Tabernacle as God commanded, and His glory filled the Tabernacle. Here, the celebration and offering continued for 12 days as response to God's promises. + The leaders of the 12 tribes brought 6 covered carts and 12 oxen as offerings. Moses accepted with God's consent. + The leaders of the tribes brought the offerings in the order of where they camped. This is the longest chapter besides Psalm 119 in the Old Testament because the same lists of the offerings were repeated 12 times. This shows that God was equally pleased with the offerings from all tribes. + The chapter ends with Moses went into the tent of meeting and heard God's voice from between the two cherubim above the atonement cover on the ark. This was the first time Moses spoke with God after the Tabernacle was set up. ### Meditation: My Story + **Identity** - The same offerings presented 12 times and recorded 12 times show clearly that the tribes were all accepted by God equally. In God's eyes, there's no difference between what others offered and what I offered. Do I see differences between the services of others and mine? + **Fidelity** - The Israelites saw the glory of God and presented their offerings. Do I see God's glory in my life? What can I present to Him as my spiritual offering to His faithfulness?

Prayer

Notes and Responses

Week 27 Day 5: Pure and Clean

### Question How Levites purified and made themselves ceremonially clean before they serve? {% include BibleLinks2020.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + In 8:1-4, God commanded Moses to tell Aaron to light up the 7 golden lamps the first time. God wanted the area in front of the lampstands to be filled with light. + Verses 8:5-26 records God's regulations for purifying the Levites. They were sent to the priests to be purified and made offerings. They were to work in the tent of meeting. The Levites were chosen as substitute for all firstborns to serve God and make atonements for the Israelites. Levites were positioned between the Veil and the Israelites, so they don't have to get near the Holy of the Holies. + Verses 9:1-14 records the first Passover after the Israelites came out of Egypt. ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - In this passage we see God provided a way to celebrate Passover for those who wish to celebrate but unable to follow the regulations because they were unable to keep themselves ceremonially clean. However, those who were able to follow the regulations but chose not to celebrate would be cut off. It is the heart that God values. Do I desire God in my heart? + **Identity** - High Priest Aaron lit up the lamps to make light shine in the Holy Place. Jesus Christ is the light of the world, lit up the path for us to walk on. What does it mean to walk in His light in my daily life? + **Fidelity** - The Levites must first clean, then atone, and then present their offerings before they can serve. What does this ordering remind me of?

Prayer

Week 27 Day 6: Follow the Cloud

### Question How did the Israelites follow God's lead? {% include BibleLinks2020.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + Israelites encamped or moved on as God commanded. + God gave the Israelites two silver trumpets at the foot of Mount Sinai to signal their movements. The silver trumpets and the cloud presented unified direction to the Israeli people. In the last days, God will also send his angels to sound trumpets to gather His people (Mat. 24:31; Rev. 8-9) + Israelites started their passage to the promised land from the desert of Sinai a year and a month and 20 days after they have come out of Egypt. A journey that took 38 years to complete is covered in 10:11-22:1. ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - The ark of covenant was at the very front leading the way to find a restful place for the Israelites (10:33). During the day, the cloud covered them from the burning sun. It might look like a lot of hard work to follow God but it is always filled with His mercy and protection. Think about the love and care He gave me as well the encouragements this passage gives me. + **Identity** - When the cloud lifted, the Israelites set out. When the cloud settled, they stayed. They sometimes would stay at one place for a long while. Sometimes they would move on the next day. When the trumpets sound, they followed. Following God means not following our own desires, no matter what. What am I following today, my own desire or God?

Week 27 Day 1: Boundaries of Canaan

### Question How the Israelites should have lived in the promised land? {% include BibleLinks2022.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + God gave Israelites the boundaries of the promised land and selected leaders, one from each of the 9 and half tribes. They followed the leadership of Joshua and high priest Elijah to distribute the land. + In Numbers 35, God gave the regulations on establishing towns. God also established the cities of refuge for those who have killed someone by accident as their places of refuge. This was to keep them away from the avengers to prevent endless revenge killings that would defile the promised land. ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - It is God's grace to establish cities of refuge for those who killed unintentionally to ensure proper trials. Sins of blood can only be cleansed with blood. Those who fled to the cities of refuge must wait for the death of the high priest. The blood of Jesus Christ has forgiven all our sins, intentional or not. He is the city of refuge for all God's people. Let me atone in front Jesus and pray to Him to release me from my sins, to give me protection and freedom in Him. + **Identity** - God's promise to Abraham was about to be realized! God kept His promise through 40 years of continuing complaints and rebellions from the Israelites. Even today, His promises to His people have not changed. What encouragements do I receive and how do I value myself with the promises He has given to me?

Week 27 Day 2: Security of Inheritance

### Question How did God ensure the land of those who has no son will not go to other tribes? {% include BibleLinks2022.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + With God's permission, the daughters of son-less Zelophehad inherited his land. The family heads now faced a new problem. Namely, a tribe's land may go to other tribes in the Year of Jubilee if daughters with inheritances marry men from other tribes. Therefore, by God's command, Moses ordered: "They may marry anyone they please as long as they marry within their father's tribal clan." The daughters obeyed. ### Meditation: My Story + **Community** - Zelophehad's daughters obeyed all God's commands. These daughters not only cared for themselves but also their father's property. God's children should look after not just themselves. Do I follow any of the world's viewpoints but against God's? What can I do to care for the church and fellow Christians?

Prayer

Week 27 Day 3: Failure of Rebellion

### Question Why did the previous generation of Israelites fail to enter the promised land 40 years ago? {% include BibleLinks2022.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + The new generation of Israelites who have not reached 20 or yet to be born at the time of exodus from Egypt, have now finally reached the plains of Moab across the Jordan river from the promised land after 40 years of wandering journey. The Book of Deuteronomy documents the last days of Moses where he followed God's command to reiterate the laws and regulations so that they "fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good." (Deu. 10:12-13) + Deuteronomy 1:1-4:43 reflects on the past 40 years of Israelite's history. + Chapter 1 reflects on the event 40 years ago when the previous generation of Israelites forgot God's protection and the miracles God performed for them. They rebelled against God for their lack of faith in God and the fear of the large and powerful descendants of Anak. ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - Israelites spent 40 years wandering on a journey that could have been completed in 11 days. It wasn't the geographical distance but their lack of faith kept them from reaching the promised land. The distance to God's wonderful promise is probably a lot closer than I think. What do I need to let go of in order to win over my disobedience and to follow God whole heartedly? + Community, Fidelity - In addition to calling the knowledgeable and renowned to become spiritual leaders, God also calls on all to serve and be responsible in all kinds of tasks in church. How am I responding to Him to serve with others as a unified team in His work? How am I letting go of my own agendas and objectives so God can use me fully?

Week 27 Day 4: Pushing up North

### Question How did Moses summarize the way Israelites complete their wandering in the wilderness and the final push up north? {% include BibleLinks2022.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + All the men died 38 years after they refused to enter the land of Canaan due to fear. Now, Israelites obeyed God's command and pushed northward. They entered the land of Edomites, Moabites, and Ammonites peacefully. However, they battled Sihon king of Heshbon when they went through the land as God began to put terror and fear of the Israelites on all nations under heaven. (Deu. 2:25) + Moses asked God to let him cross the Jordan river but God did not let him. God did, however, let him to go up to mount Pisgah to see the promised land. ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - Forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything. We are often burdened by unimportant things and unable to enter God's rest even though we lack nothing. Can I let God take the burden off my shoulder? + **Community** - Moses encouraged Joshua: Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you (Deu. 3:22) Is there someone I can give encouragement to? + **Community** - Those two and half tribes gotten their lands before entering the promised land helped the rest of the people enter the promised land before settling on their one land. Have I thought about sharing what I have while indulging in God's blessings?

Week 27 Day 5: Plead to Israelites

### Question What did Moses plead desperately to Israelites? {% include BibleLinks2022.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + Moses pleaded continuously to Israelites to obey God's law and pass on the obedience to their descendants so they may continue living on the promised land. + Moses established three cities of refuge to the east of Jordan river for the two and half tribes. ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - As a result of obeying God's law, will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." Is my head knowledge of God's law real wisdom? Do I have the law embedded deep in my heart? + **Walking with God** - God forbids idolatry because we believe what can be seen and ignore the unseen truth, way, and life. Do I believe my own eyes and what I see more than the unseen God?

Prayer

Notes and Responses

Week 27 Day 6: The Ten Commandments

### Question What were the ten commandments? {% include BibleLinks2022.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + God gave Israelites the laws in chapters 5 to 11. + God reiterates the ten commandments to the new generation of Israelites. The ten commandments are the essence of the law. The first four are about God, the last six are about people. + Moses stressed "it was not with our ancestors that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today." (Deu. 5:3) ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - The Israelites feared God as they heard His voice in the fire. Jesus said: "because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (John 20:29) Do I fear God from the bottom of my heart so that I would obey His law and bring blessings to myself and descendants?

Week 27 Day 1: A New King

### Question How did Saul's kingship meet its end? {% include BibleLinks2024.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker. + David became king of Judah, continued to have more wives and sons. + Abner betrayed the house of Saul and defected to David. Abner submitted to David's demand to bring him back Michal who was Saul's daughter and David's first wife. Abner went back to confer with the Israelite elders about establishing a covenant with David. + Joab murdered Abner as revenge for his brother Asahel. David cursed Joab and mourned for Abner. Thus, the Israelites in the north knew it wasn't David's idea to kill Abner. + The Israelite king Ish-Bosheth was murdered by two of Saul's raiding band leaders. They were executed by David when they asked David for the credit of the killing. David buried Ish-Bosheth with Abner. ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - Abner knew David was God's anointed and yet made Ish-Bosheth king? When angered by Ish-Bosheth, Abner defected to David. What was his motive? What was Joab's sin in killing Abner? Why did David curse Joab and told him to mourn and bury Abner? What is the relationship between the three? + **Integrity** - The two leaders of Saul's raiding bands went to David to claim credit for killing Ish-Bosheth. Whey did David execute them? David should have known that Abner was behind the weak Ish-Bosheth during the seven-year-standoff against the house of Saul. Why was David's attitude different toward Abner compared to these two raiding band leaders? What strengths or shortcomings do I see in David's life?

Prayer

Notes and Responses

Week 27 Day 2: Third Time Anointed

### Question How was David's relationship with God after he was anointed as king of Israel? {% include BibleLinks2024.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + David got anointed as Israel king, captured Jerusalem, and built a palace. David knew God had established him as the king of Israel. + Led by God, David defeated the Philistines. + David attempted to bring the ark back to Jerusalem but did not follow the law when transporting it. They committed infraction against God's holiness and caused God's anger to burn against Uzzah. David was angry and afraid until God's anger had gone away. David brought the ark back the second time to Jerusalem. He obeyed the law, humbled himself, danced with all his might, and shouted in the sound of trumpets in great rejoice. + David wanted to build a house for the Lord. Instead, God promised David that He would establish for David and descendants a house and kingdom forever. This is the hope of the Messiah. David prayed to answer God's blessings, His promise is for all His people, and all people would come back to Him and praise Him. ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - What was the mistake David made in his first attempt to bring the ark back? Why was Uzzah killed? What caused David to be angry and then afraid? Seen from David's attitude, how had his relationship with God changed in the second attempt? Have I experienced the serious side of God's righteousness in my spiritual life? How did this experience help me in my relationship with God? + **Integrity** - What characters of David can I see in his prayer replying to God's promise? He not only thanked God for establishing his household, he also saw God's promise for all Israelites and all people to go to God and praise God. What can I learn from David with him looking beyond his own spiritual circumstance? In what areas may I see farther?

Prayer

Notes and Responses

Week 27 Day 3: Establishing the Kingdom

### Question What nations surrounding Israel did David defeat? {% include BibleLinks2024.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + God gave victories to David over the surrounding nations. David dedicated to the Lord the gold, silver, and bronze articles he had plundered from the nations. + David was king over Israel and acted righteously. + David brought Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan and showed him God's kindness. ### Meditation: My Story + **Walking with God** - God gave David victories over the nations. Some of them weren't driven out by the Israelites when they first entered the land of Canaan. David dedicated the gold, silver, and bronze articles to God. Compare to Saul when God commanded him to drive out the Amalekites, how was David's relationship to God different from Saul's? How should I seek God's will in the works of my daily life? + **Community** - David wanted to "show God's kindness" toward Mephibosheth and took him as his own son. What standard shall we adhere to in loving our fellow Christians? How may we show God's kindness?

Prayer

Notes and Responses

Week 27 Day 4: David Committed Sin

### Question What sin did David commit on the matter Bathsheba? {% include BibleLinks2024.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + David was going to show kindness to Hanun the new Ammonite king, but the envoy David sent was humiliated. Thus, the war between Israelites and the Ammonites began. Joab was fighting on the frontline and the ark was encamped, but David stayed behind in the palace. + The army was fighting and yet David stayed in Jerusalem, saw Uriah's wife Bathsheba, and committed adultery. David called Uriah back as a failed attempt to cover up Bathsheba's pregnancy. Then, David used Joab and through the enemy's hands to kill Uriah. + But the thing David had done displeased the Lord. ### Meditation: My Story + **Integrity** - While the army fought on the frontline and the ark encamped on the battlefield, David stayed behind and did the preposterous thing. What life's integrities can I see in Uriah from his answer to David? Much time had past from David first saw Bathsheba to when she became his wife. Why didn't David repent in such a long time? How am I being warned seeing David did not repent immediately even though he had a good relationship with God? Have I ever fallen into the depth of sin but never realized it? How is God reminding me?

Prayer

Notes and Responses

Week 27 Day 5: David in Repentance

### Question What was David's attitude after Nathan had rebuked him? {% include BibleLinks2024.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + God sent Nathan to David to rebuke him and told him that he would be judged. + Nathan started with a fable to point out that David was insatiable, had despised the Lord's command, and done things displeasing to the Lord. + Nathan declared God's judgement that the sword will never depart from David's house, his wives will be tarnished under broad daylight, and his son with Bathsheba will die. + David repented immediately. The Lord took away his sin, but David must bear the consequence. + David fasted and prayed to the Lord for mercy to the child. But the Lord's mind did not change. David submitted to the Lord, cleansed himself and worshiped the Lord. + God blessed David and loved Solomon, a son David had with Bathsheba. + Joab subdued the Ammonites and invited David to receive the victory. The Ammonites were defeated. ### Meditation: My Story + **Integrity** - Nathan told David that his sin began with his insatiability. From his insatiability, what laws of the ten commandments did David break? David's seemingly insignificant insatiability, like Israelites' in the wilderness, became ever greater sin. How am I being insatiable with everything God had given me? Let me pray to God to help me to be joyful and satisfied. + **Integrity** - Although God had made up His mind on the judgment, David still prayed for His mercy and, at the same time, submitted to His will. What can I learn about prayer from seeing David's worship to God after knowing His will would not change?

Prayer

Notes and Responses

Week 27 Day 6: Murder and Adultery

### Question What were David's problems in educating his sons? {% include BibleLinks2024.html %} ### Meditation: God's Story + Encouraged by Jonadab, Amnon devised a plan to trick David into bringing Tamar, Amnon's sister of different mother, to him and raped her. Tamar's brother Absalom hated Amnon. + Two years later, Absalom devised a plan to trick David and murdered Amnon. Absalom escaped to Geshur. + Three years later, Joab found a wise woman and devised a plan to persuade David in bringing Absalom back to Jerusalem. However, David would not see Absalom. + Two years later, Absalom devised a plan to force Joab to talk to David to let Absalom meet and reunite with David. ### Meditation: My Story + **Integrity** - Amnon raped his own sister of another mother. David did nothing besides being angry. What should have David done that would be pleasing to God? Absalom murdered Amnon and escaped to Geshur. Why again did David do nothing? Why did Joab persuade David to bring Absalom back? David would not see Absalom after he had come back so Absalom forced Joab to help with his meeting with David. What was Absalom's motive? As a father, what should have David done but didn't do during the seven-year span of all these events? Have I ignored my responsibility as a custodian of my inheritance from God and did not do what I should do, whether I am a parent or not?
