Question
Why did the remnant of Judah go to Egypt?

Johanan and all the people approached Jeremiah and said to him, “Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.”

The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, “If you stay in this land, I will build you up and not tear you down.”

If you are determined to go to Egypt and you do go to settle there, then the sword you fear will overtake you there, and the famine you dread will follow you into Egypt, and there you will die.

Johanan and all the people accused Jeremiah of lying. So Johanan and all the army officers and all the people disobeyed the Lord’s command to stay in the land of Judah and entered Egypt.

The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, “Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon will come and attack Egypt.”

- Integrity - Everyone accused Jeremiah of lying and not delivering the Lord’s message. Why? When I pray, do I listen only to the answer I want to hear just like those people?

The Lord blamed the people for burning incense to and worshiping other gods that aroused His anger to destroy them.

The Lord was determined to take away the remnant of Judah who were determined to go to Egypt to settle there. They will all perish in Egypt.

All the men living in Lower and Upper Egypt said to Jeremiah, “We will not listen to the Lord, we will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.”

Jeremiah warned them, “The Lord could no longer endure your wicked actions and the detestable things you did.”

- Identity - The remnant of Judah went to Egypt experienced the fall of their nation but still wouldn’t repent and continued to worship idols. How may I learn obedience from my past sins?

What happened to the army of Pharaoh Necho?

Concerning the army of Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt, which was defeated at Carchemish on the Euphrates River by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in the fourth year of Jehoiakim. They were terrified, retreating, defeated, and fleeing in haste.

The Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to attack Egypt.
-
Announce this in Egypt, “Take your positions and get ready, for the sword devours those around you.”
-
The Lord encouraged the remnant of Israel, “Do not be afraid, I will surely save you out of a distant place.”

- Identity - The Lord encouraged the Israel not to be afraid for He would save them out of a distant place. During distress, how may I be comforted by God?

What would become of the Philistines and Moabites?

Jeremiah prophesied the day had come for the Lord to destroy all the Philistines and to remove all survivors who could help Tyre and Sidon.

Jeremiah prophesied the punishment to Moab, the woe to Nebo, the disgrace and capture of Kiriathaim and the shattering of Misgab.
-
Moab would be ashamed of Chemosh, as Israel was ashamed when they trusted in Bethel.
-
Moab had defied the Lord and ridiculed Israel, for her arrogance, her insolence, her pride, her conceit, and the haughtiness of her heart.
-
The fortunes of Moab would be restored.

- Identity - The destruction of the Philistines came from the Lord. Who is in control of the rise and fall of the nations today? How do I look at the politics of the world? How does my view affect me?

Jeremiah prophesied the Ammonites’ punishment. Rabbah would become a mound of ruins.

The Lord would restore the fortunes of the Ammonites afterward.

The Lord would bring disaster on Esau at the time when He punishes him. Edom will become an object of horror.

Damascus had become feeble, she had turned to flee and panic had gripped her; anguish and pain had seized her.

Kedar and Hazor would be attacked, taken and carried off.

What was the source of Babylon’s destruction?

Babylon would be punished, captured, put to shame and Marduk would be filled with terror.

The people of Israel and the people of Judah together would go in tears to seek the Lord their God.
-
Announced once then again, the punishment of Babylon.
-
The people of Israel were oppressed, and the people of Judah as well. All their captors hold them fast, refusing to let them go.
-
A sword against the Babylonians, those who live in Babylon and against her officials and wise men!
-
The young of the flock will be dragged away; their pasture will be appalled at their fate.

- Identity - What is our responsibility when God’s chosen people are being devoured? Take a look at verses 17 and 18. What shall I do when facing those who have sinned and those who deserve punishment?
