Week 43 Day 6: Retribution and Discipline
Question:How Did Eliphaz, Job’s First Friend, Try to Comfort Job?
Scripture Reading
Meditation: God’s Story
- Chapters 4–14 form the first section of the dialogue. The three friends speak in turn, and Job responds to each of them.
- Eliphaz, the first friend, speaks at the greatest length. The speeches of the subsequent friends become progressively shorter, while Job’s responses grow longer.
- Eliphaz insists that divine retribution is certain because no one is innocent before God. He interprets Job’s suffering as God’s discipline and suggests that Job needs to recognize God’s blessings.
- Job responds by defending the lament with which he began. He accuses his friends of failing to comfort him, asserts his innocence, and ultimately cries out directly to God for the comfort his friends cannot provide.
Meditation: My Story
- Community - When should we avoid offering comfort in the way Eliphaz did?
